Tooth Extractions & Wisdom Teeth in Wiarton
What is a Tooth Extraction?
A tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the bone. At Wiarton Dental, our dentists perform extractions only when a less invasive option would be ineffective, or if keeping the tooth will compromise your oral health.
Common reasons for pulling a tooth include excessive tooth damage and problematic wisdom teeth. Teeth are also sometimes pulled to prepare for other dental procedures.
Wisdom Tooth Removal
Wisdom teeth are the last set of molars to erupt in the back corners of a normal adult mouth, usually between 17 and 25 years of age.
This third set of teeth is not always functional, and can crowd out other teeth as they develop. They may also create problems with your oral hygiene. In these cases, your dentist may recommend removing them.
Repairing Excessive Damage
In most cases, your dentist will work to save a tooth whenever possible. However, there are circumstances, such as injury, gum disease, or excessive decay, which require extraction.
If you have a damaged tooth that needs to be extracted, your dentist will discuss tooth replacement options with you, which may include dental bridges, dental crowns, and dentures.
